Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are near the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, you can walk to the Former Place of Kokutaiji Temple and Atago Pond. Head east towards the Peace Memorial Museum, then continue along the river until you reach the Tachibanabashi bridge. Cross the bridge and turn left onto Komachi-dori. Walk straight for about 15-20 minutes, and you will arrive at your destination at Komachi, Naka Ward. No cost.

    From Hiroshima Station, take the Hiroshima Electric Railway (Hiroden) tram line 1 (Red Line) towards 'Hiroshima Port'. Ride for about 15 minutes and get off at 'Kembyō' station. Once you exit the tram, head south on Kembyō-dōri street until you reach the intersection with Komachi-dōri, then turn left. Continue walking straight for approximately 5 minutes, and you will arrive at the Former Place of Kokutaiji Temple and Atago Pond. The fare is 240 yen for adults.

Located in the heart of Hiroshima, the Former Place of Kokutaiji Temple and Atago Pond is a historical landmark with serene beauty and cultural significance. Originally the site of Kokutaiji Temple, the pond serves as a reminder of the region's spiritual heritage. Kokutaiji Temple was established in 1300 by the monk Jiun Myoi and was an influential Zen temple. During the Edo period (1603–1867), it was the most influential temple in the city, handling burials for the Asano clan. The temple was destroyed during the atomic bombing, but Atago Pond and some of the surrounding trees survived. In 1978, the temple was rebuilt to the west, and the remains of Atago Pond were preserved as a reminder of the city's resilience. Visitors can stroll along the water's edge, enjoy the scenery, and reflect on the history of the location. The pond is a sanctuary for wildlife, including birds and fish. The area is ideal for a picnic or relaxation.
