Discover more about Peace Blvd

Peace Boulevard, or Heiwa Odori, stands as a testament to Hiroshima's resilience and commitment to peace. This 100-meter-wide boulevard stretches 3.6 kilometers across the city, from Hijiyama Park in the east to the area near Nishi-Hiroshima Station in the west. Originally conceived as a firebreak in the aftermath of the atomic bombing, the boulevard's construction began in 1945, undertaken by citizens and students. In 1951, it was officially named Peace Boulevard. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial City Construction Law of 1948 formalized plans for the boulevard, Hiroshima Castle, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, and Hiroshima Chūō Park. In the mid-1950s, a tree-planting campaign transformed the area, with approximately 120,000 trees donated from Hiroshima Prefecture and contributions arriving from across Japan and the world, symbolizing a collective desire for peace. Today, Peace Boulevard is a verdant green space featuring diverse flora. The boulevard is more than just a road; it's a venue for various events, including the Hiroshima Dreamination, concerts, ekiden races, and the Hiroshima Flower Festival. Isamu Noguchi designed the railings of the Heiwa-ohashi Bridge and Nishiheiwa-ohashi Bridge, adding artistic significance to the area. As you stroll along Peace Boulevard, you'll encounter cherry blossom trees, monuments, and green spaces, all contributing to the city's message of hope.
