Discover more about Cat Alley (Neko no Hosomichi)

Neko no Hosomichi, or Cat Alley, is a unique and enchanting attraction nestled in the historic port town of Onomichi. This narrow, 200-meter-long alleyway, also known as Cat's Narrow Path, winds its way from Ushitora Shrine towards Tenneji Temple, offering a delightful blend of art, nature, and feline companionship. The alley's transformation began in 1998 when local artist Shunji Sonoyama, inspired by the area's quirky atmosphere, started placing his hand-painted 'fukuishi neko' (lucky stone cats) along the path. These unique stone cats, each with different expressions, can be found perched on fences, roofs, and hidden amongst the greenery, bringing a playful and artistic touch to the area. It is believed that stroking their heads three times brings good fortune. As you stroll along Cat Alley, you'll discover a variety of cat-themed art, including murals, sculptures, and handmade decorations. The path is also home to several quirky art galleries, cafes, and shops housed in renovated traditional houses. Don't be surprised to encounter real cats lounging in the sun or playfully interacting with visitors, adding to the alley's charm. Cat Alley is part of a larger project called Ihatov, envisioned by Sonoyama as a combination of art, people, and history. The area connects the town, art, people, and greenery into one unique experience. Nearby attractions include the Maneki-Neko Museum, home to over 3,000 lucky cats, and the Onomichi Herb Garden Bouquet d'Arbres.
