Discover more about Artillery battery No.1 (Northern Fort)

Artillery Battery No. 1, historically named Fortress Battery No. 1, is an integral part of the Liepāja Fortress and a visually striking landmark. Constructed in the late 19th century by the Russian Tsarist army, the battery was intended to protect the navy base from potential enemy attacks. However, less than ten years after its construction, the fortress was deemed a strategic mistake and ceased operations. Despite its short operational period, Artillery Battery No. 1 remains an impressive testament to military architecture and engineering. The site features partially destroyed artillery batteries and underground structures, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The fortifications were detonated twice in attempts to destroy them. Today, the site is open to the public, offering a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the grounds, wander through subterranean labyrinths and bunkers, and learn about the history and construction of the Liepāja Fortress. The strategic position of the fort provides stunning views of the Baltic Sea and the surrounding landscape, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature enthusiasts. Please note that caution is advised when exploring the Northern Fort, as the steep shore of the Baltic Sea is prone to coastal landslides, and walking under the ruins is not permitted.
