Discover more about Herz Jesu

Herz Jesu Church, located on Kolpingplatz in Bregenz, is a prominent example of Neo-Gothic architecture. Constructed between 1905 and 1912, the church was designed by Stuttgart architect Joseph Cades. The impetus for building the church arose in 1896 when the citizens of Bregenz decided to establish a fund for a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church's exterior is characterized by its two towering spires, which reach a height of 62 meters. The facade, reminiscent of Norman architecture, features intricate brickwork and a cruciform layout with a three-nave basilica. The clerestory, almost twice the height of the side aisles, allows ample natural light to flood the central nave. Inside, visitors are greeted by colorful stained glass windows that create a tranquil atmosphere. The church is also home to a remarkable organ, built between 1928 and 1931 by Josef Behmann, featuring 4,650 pipes. The Herz-Jesu Bell, weighing 5,270 kg, is considered a masterpiece of post-war bell casting. Masses are held regularly, and the church is open to visitors throughout the week. The surrounding area offers charming streets with local shops and cafes.
