St. Gallen Cathedral: A Baroque Masterpiece

The Cathedral of St. Gallen, also known as Stiftskirche St. Gallen, is a magnificent landmark and a key highlight of the Abbey District, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. The cathedral stands on the site where the Irish monk Gallus built his hermitage in 612. The current Baroque structure was constructed between 1755 and 1767, under the direction of architects Peter Thumb, Gabriel Loser, and Johann Caspar Bagnato. Stepping inside, visitors are greeted with opulent interiors, including frescoes by Josef Wannenmacher and stucco work by the Gigl brothers. The cathedral's airy and light-filled interior is adorned with paintings covering almost every square inch of the walls and ceilings. The crypt, dating back to the 9th century, houses the tomb of Saint Gallus and a relic of his skull. The south altar features a bell brought back by Saint Gall himself from Ireland, one of the three oldest surviving bells in Europe. The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a center for music, fostering the tradition of church music in the St. Gallen Abbey complex. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the cathedral's architecture, artistry, and religious significance. The Abbey Library, adjacent to the cathedral, is one of the oldest libraries in the world, housing manuscripts dating back to the 8th century.
