Theater Chur: A Cultural Gem in Switzerland's Oldest City
Experience world-class performances in a historic setting at Theater Chur, the cultural heart of Graubünden's capital.
Theater Chur, formerly known as Stadttheater Chur, stands as the largest theater in the canton of Graubünden. Established in 1876, the theater has a rich history of continuous seasonal operation, with regular guest performances in Davos, Glarus, Rheinfelden and Aarau. Originally located on Zeughausstrasse, the theater moved to its current building on Theaterplatz in 1959, neighboring the Grossratsgebäude. The building itself has historical significance; it was originally an armory designed by Johannes Ludwig between 1861 and 1863, before being converted to a theater and cantonal parliament building. The conversion was carried out in 1959 by architect Martin Risch. The theater fosters new and interesting experiments and cultural dialogues which enrich Chur's diverse cultural life. Its season, running from September to June, includes international productions, national and regional co-productions, concerts, and performances by actors, musicians, and puppeteers. Theater Chur also hosts concert series and local amateur dramatics. The Café Bar on the first floor is open one hour before, during, and at least one hour after performances and can be hired for events.
