Designed by Johannes Ludwig, the villa's design incorporates Orientalist elements, reflecting the travels of its original owner, Jacques Ambrosius von Planta. Inside, visitors can admire the villa's partially sumptuous decor, which stands in contrast to the striking yet simple new building. In 2016, the museum expanded with the addition of a cube-shaped building featuring a gridded facade in cast concrete, designed by architects Barozzi Veiga.
