Bündner Kunstmuseum: A Cultural Gem in Chur

The Bündner Kunstmuseum, or Graubünden Art Museum, is a cultural highlight in Chur, Switzerland, offering visitors an immersive experience into the art and history of the Graubünden region. Founded in 1919, the museum is located in the heart of Chur and comprises two architecturally distinct buildings: the historic Villa Planta and a contemporary extension designed by Barozzi Veiga. The Villa Planta, built in the 1870s, is a stunning example of neoclassical architecture. Designed by Johannes Ludwig, the villa's design incorporates Orientalist elements, reflecting the travels of its original owner, Jacques Ambrosius von Planta. Inside, visitors can admire the villa's partially sumptuous decor, which stands in contrast to the striking yet simple new building. In 2016, the museum expanded with the addition of a cube-shaped building featuring a gridded facade in cast concrete, designed by architects Barozzi Veiga. This modern extension complements the Villa Planta, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. The extension is connected to the Villa Planta via an underground passage. The museum's collection includes works by Graubünden-local artists such as Angelica Kauffmann, the Giacometti family, Giovanni Segantini, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, showcasing historical and contemporary artists, with a focus on the cultural and geographical context of the Graubünden region.
