Grossratsgebäude: Seat of Graubünden's Parliament

Discover the Grossratsgebäude in Chur, a historic building that is home to the cantonal parliament of Graubünden.

3.7

The Grossratsgebäude, located in Chur, is the meeting place for the parliament of Graubünden. Constructed between 1861 and 1863, the building initially served as an armory. Architect Johannes Ludwig designed it in the Neo-Renaissance style. In 1959, architect Martin Risch redesigned the building to accommodate both the parliament and the Chur Theatre. A competition was held to design a new entrance, which was won by architect Valerio Olgiati and Tamara Olgiati. The redesign of the entrance was completed between 2008 and 2009, but it was met with public criticism and legal disputes. Inside the Grossratsgebäude's Grand Council Hall are 40 coats of arms from the 39 municipalities and the canton of Graubünden, created in 1960 by Giuseppe Scartezzini. Today, visitors can appreciate the building's architecture and explore the surrounding area, including cafes and shops.
