Discover more about Pulverturm

The Pulverturm, standing at the western tip of Lindau Island on Lake Constance, is a striking reminder of the town's rich history. Constructed in 1508 as a robust defensive tower forming part of the outer city walls, it played a vital role in protecting Lindau. Its strategic position allowed for a clear view of the lake, enabling the city to guard against potential threats. In the late 18th century, the tower was repurposed as a gunpowder storage facility, lending it the name 'Pulverturm'. The tower's original tent roof was lowered in 1629 to make it less vulnerable to attack, a decision that proved effective as the tower survived the Thirty Years' War unscathed. At the turn of the 20th century, the Pulverturm was transformed into a summer residence for Lindau's mayor, Heinrich Schützinger. Architect Friedrich von Thiersch oversaw the conversion of the interior into living spaces while preserving the historical exterior. The tower became a gathering place for notable guests, with its walls echoing with 'cheerful conviviality'. Today, after a restoration in 1988, the Pulverturm serves as an exclusive location for events. Its thick walls enclose a unique space equipped with modern amenities while retaining its historic charm. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Alps, making it a memorable setting for any occasion.
