Discover more about Waaghaus

The Waaghaus, a protected monument in St. Gallen's old town, stands as a testament to the city's rich history and architectural heritage. Constructed between 1584 and 1585, it initially functioned as a trade hall, a common feature in pre-industrial European cities. The name "Waaghaus," derived from the German word "Waag" (scale), reflects its original purpose as a place where goods were weighed, taxed, and stored. Over the centuries, the Waaghaus adapted to the changing needs of St. Gallen. By the 19th century, with the rise of railways and new customs warehouses, its original function became obsolete. It briefly housed a police station and then transformed into a post office in 1876, serving in that role until 1958. In 1958, the population voted to preserve and renovate the Waaghaus. Today, the open ground floor hosts markets and public gatherings, while the upper floor houses a versatile space for exhibitions and concerts, as well as the council chamber for the St. Gallen city parliament. The Waaghaus boasts several distinctive architectural features. The open lower level, once designed for carts to pass through, now provides a grand entrance to events. The exterior features a clock with a moon phase indicator and a roof turret with an onion dome, salvaged from the old town hall. The building's architecture showcases the evolution of styles over the ages, making it a delight for photography enthusiasts and history buffs.
