History of Bago Region

Bago, originally known as Pegu, traces its origins back to the Mon Kingdom of Hongsawadi. The city was founded in 825 AD by two Mon brothers, Thamala and Wimala. It became an important settlement due to its strategic location along trade routes connecting China and India.
Between the 14th and 16th centuries, Bago flourished as the capital of the Hanthawaddy Kingdom. Under the reign of King Rajadhirat and Queen Shin Sawbu, the city became a major center for Buddhism and trade. The Shwemawdaw Pagoda, one of Myanmar's tallest and most revered stupas, was expanded during this period.
In 1539, King Bayinnaung of the Taungoo Dynasty conquered Bago, unifying various regions to form the Second Burmese Empire. Under Bayinnaung's rule, Bago became a prominent political and military center. The Kanbawzathadi Palace, his royal residence, was constructed during his reign and remains a significant historical site.
Bago faced numerous challenges in the 18th century, including invasions and internal strife. In 1757, the city was sacked by the forces of Alaungpaya, the founder of the Konbaung Dynasty, leading to a period of decline. Many of its historic structures were destroyed during this time.
During the 19th century, Bago came under British control after the Second Anglo-Burmese War in 1852. The city was incorporated into British Burma, and its strategic importance waned. However, it remained a vital agricultural and trade center during the colonial period.
Following Myanmar's independence in 1948, Bago gradually recovered and developed. The city is now an important cultural and religious hub, attracting tourists with its historical landmarks, such as the Shwethalyaung Buddha, a colossal reclining Buddha statue, and the Kyaik Pun Pagoda, known for its four giant Buddha images.
