Sparks, Nevada, was founded in 1904 as a result of the Southern Pacific Railroad's decision to move its maintenance facilities from Wadsworth to a more central location near Reno. This decision led to the establishment of a planned community, initially called Harriman after the railroad executive E.H. Harriman.
