Start at the Christchurch Bus Interchange located at 37 Lichfield Street. Take the bus number 3 towards 'New Brighton'. This bus will take you along Ferry Road, offering views of the city. After approximately 30 minutes, get off at the stop 'Ferry Rd near Marriotts Rd'. From there, transfer to bus number 29 towards 'Leeston'. Stay on this bus for about 40 minutes until you reach the stop 'Leeston'.

Once you arrive in Leeston, walk towards the direction of the lake. Head southwest on High Street towards the Main South Road. Continue onto Leeston-Glentunnel Road, following the signs that lead towards Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora). The walk will take approximately 30-40 minutes. Pay attention to the local signs, as they will guide you to the lake.

If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike in Christchurch before heading to the bus interchange. Take the bus number 3 as previously described to 'Ferry Rd near Marriotts Rd'. From there, cycle towards the Rakaia River Road, which connects directly to Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora). The cycling distance from Leeston to the lake is about 10 km, and it offers scenic views along the way.
