To reach Lake Ellesmere from Christchurch using public transport, start by heading to the Central Bus Station located at 37 Lichfield Street. You will need to catch the bus number 28 (Ferrymead) towards Ferrymead, which departs from the bus stand. After approximately 30 minutes, get off at the stop named 'Ferrymead Park'. From there, you will need to walk to the Ferrymead Bridge and then follow the path towards Lake Ellesmere. It is about a 20-minute walk from the bridge to the lake itself.

Bicycle
If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the rental shops in Christchurch. Start your journey by cycling east towards the Summit Road. Follow the cycle path along the coast of the estuary, which leads you directly towards Lake Ellesmere. The ride will take you approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. Ensure to keep an eye on the signage directing you to Lake Ellesmere along the route.

Walking
For those who enjoy walking, you can start your journey at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. From there, head towards the Avon River and follow the riverside path towards the east. After about 1 hour of walking, you will reach the outskirts of the city. Continue walking towards the eastern suburbs and eventually make your way to the Ferrymead area. The total walk might take about 3 to 4 hours, depending on your pace, and you will enjoy scenic views along the way.
