Walking
Start at the Gisborne city center, specifically at the Gisborne i-SITE Visitor Information Centre located at 209 Grey Street. From there, head east along Grey Street towards the beach. Once you reach the beachfront, turn left onto the scenic walkway alongside the waterfront. Continue walking along the promenade, enjoying the views of the ocean. After approximately 2 kilometers, you will reach the end of the beach where you’ll see Wainui Beach. Follow the path as it curves around the beach, keeping the ocean on your right. As you progress, look for signs directing you to Makorori Headland. The walk will take you past beautiful coastal scenery, and you may spot surfers and beachgoers along the way.

From the Gisborne city center, make your way to the nearest bus stop, which is located on Gladstone Road. Catch the local bus heading to Okitu. Inform the bus driver that you want to get off at the Makorori Headland stop. The journey will take about 15-20 minutes. Once you disembark, follow the signs to Makorori Headland, which is a short walk from the bus stop. The area is known for its scenic views and hiking opportunities, so prepare for a delightful walk along the coastline.

If you prefer cycling, you can rent a bike from one of the local rental shops in Gisborne. Begin your journey from the city center and make your way toward the coast by following the cycle paths that lead to Wainui Beach. Once you reach Wainui Beach, follow the coastal road (Makorori Road) heading north. The ride is approximately 7 kilometers and offers stunning views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes. Keep an eye out for any signs indicating Makorori Headland, as you’ll be able to park your bike at designated areas close to the headland to explore on foot.
