Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from the main entrance of Tongariro National Park. Follow the signs towards the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Drive on State Highway 47 and then turn onto the Tongariro Alpine Crossing access road. The parking area is about 1.5 km from the trailhead. You can park your car at the Ketetahi parking area (make sure to arrive early as it can fill up quickly). From the parking area, follow the well-marked track towards Ketetahi Falls, which is approximately a 30-minute walk.

• Public Transportation

  If you are using public transportation, check for shuttle services that operate from nearby towns such as Turangi or National Park Village. Many shuttles offer pick-up and drop-off at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trailhead. Once dropped off, you will need to hike approximately 30 minutes along the well-trodden track to reach Ketetahi Falls. Be sure to confirm the shuttle schedule in advance and account for the cost, which typically ranges from NZD 30 to NZD 50 each way.

• Hiking

  Regardless of your starting point within Tongariro National Park, the most common way to reach Ketetahi Falls is by hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This is a well-maintained trail leading directly to the falls. Ensure you are equipped with sturdy hiking shoes, enough water, and snacks for the journey. The hike to the falls is around 12 km into the trail and will take about 3-4 hours of walking. Plan your hike considering the weather conditions and daylight hours.
