Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, start from the Whakapapa Village, which is a key access point in Tongariro National Park. From Whakapapa Village, head south on State Highway 1. Turn left onto the Turoa Road towards the Turoa Ski Area. After approximately 5 km, look for the sign for the Tama Lakes Track on your left. Park your vehicle at the designated parking area, and then follow the well-marked trailhead for the Tama Lakes Track. The hike to Lower Tama Lake will take about 1-1.5 hours depending on your pace.

  • Public Transportation

    For those using public transportation, you can take a shuttle service from Taupo or nearby towns that offer transfers to Tongariro National Park. Make sure to book your shuttle in advance and inform the driver that you wish to be dropped off at the start of the Tama Lakes Track near Whakapapa Village.
