Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, the most common route to Tongariro National Park from Palmerston North is via State Highway 3 (SH3). Start by heading north on SH3 from Palmerston North. Continue on SH3 until you reach the intersection with State Highway 1 (SH1) near Bulls. Here, take the exit to merge onto SH1 heading south towards Wellington. After approximately 30 kilometers, take the exit onto State Highway 47 (SH47) towards National Park Village. Continue on SH47 for about 20 kilometers, following the signs to Tongariro National Park. The park entrance will be on your right. Please note that parking fees may apply within the park, typically around NZD 5 to NZD 10 per day.

    To travel to Tongariro National Park via public transport, you can take a bus from Palmerston North to National Park Village. The bus service 'InterCity' operates routes that connect Palmerston North with National Park. Check the InterCity website for the latest schedules and book your ticket in advance.
