Travel Guide to Oturere Hut

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start at the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre located at 32 Carroll Street, National Park Village. From there, take State Highway 47 heading south towards Whakapapa Village. After approximately 15 km, turn left onto the Oturere Road. Follow this road until you reach the parking area at the end. The Oturere Hut is about a 1.5-hour walk from the parking area. Follow the marked track leading from the car park, which will guide you through beautiful landscapes until you arrive at the hut.

• Public Transportation

  To access Oturere Hut via public transport, first take a bus to the National Park Village. Intercity and other regional bus services operate to this area. Once you arrive at the National Park Village, you will need to arrange for a taxi or shuttle service to take you to the beginning of the Oturere Road, as public transport does not go directly to the hut. Once dropped off, follow the marked track from the parking area to the Oturere Hut, which takes about 1.5 hours of walking.

• Walking

  From the nearest parking area at the end of Oturere Road, the Oturere Hut is approximately a 1.5-hour walk. The track is well-marked and takes you through stunning landscapes typical of Tongariro National Park. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking boots and carry water and snacks for the journey.
