Getting There

    If you are driving, set your GPS to 'Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Manawatū-Whanganui 3382'. From Palmerston North, take State Highway 3 (SH3) heading north. After approximately 60 km, turn onto State Highway 1 (SH1) towards National Park. Continue on SH1 for about 20 km until you reach the junction for the Tongariro National Park. Follow the signs to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The drive takes around 1.5 hours. There may be parking fees at the trailhead, which can vary.

    To reach Soda Springs via public transport, take a bus from Palmerston North to National Park Village. Bus services like InterCity or Kiwi Experience operate this route, and you can check schedules online. Once you reach National Park Village, you can catch a shuttle service that takes you to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing starting point. The bus ride to National Park takes approximately 2.5 hours, and the shuttle to the crossing can cost around NZD 30. Make sure to check the return schedules for the shuttle as well.
