Car
If you are driving, start your journey from Whakapapa Village, which is a central hub in Tongariro National Park. Head south on State Highway 47 towards National Park Village. After approximately 1.5 kilometers, turn onto Taranaki Road, marked by clear signs for Tawhai Falls. Follow Taranaki Road for about 7 kilometers until you reach the Tawhai Falls car park. The car park is a designated area for visitors, and parking is free. From the car park, it is a short walk (approximately 10 minutes) to the falls.

Public Transportation
For those using public transport, check the local bus services that operate from National Park Village to Whakapapa Village. The Tongariro Shuttle is a common option, and you can inquire about their schedules. Once you arrive at Whakapapa Village, you will need to walk approximately 1.5 kilometers south on State Highway 47 to reach the turnoff for Taranaki Road. From there, follow the same route as drivers to the Tawhai Falls car park.

If you are already within walking distance in Tongariro National Park, you can enjoy the scenic trails leading to Tawhai Falls. Follow the pathways that lead south from Whakapapa Village, keeping an eye out for signs directing you to Taranaki Road. The walk from Whakapapa Village to Tawhai Falls will take around 1-2 hours depending on your pace and allows you to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way.
