A Reflection of Tragedy: The Monument to the Victims of the Teatro Baquet Fire

Getting There

• Walking

  If you are starting from São Bento Railway Station, exit the station and head towards the main square, Praça da Liberdade. From there, walk down Rua do Almada until you reach Rua de Santa Catarina. Turn left onto Rua de Santa Catarina and continue straight until you reach the intersection with Rua da Meditação. Turn right onto Rua da Meditação. You will see the Monumento às vítimas do incêndio do Teatro Baquet at the end of the street.

• Walking

  If you are at the iconic Livraria Lello bookstore, exit and head towards Rua das Carmelitas. Walk straight until you reach Praça dos Clerigos. From there, continue walking down Rua de Cândido dos Reis until you reach Rua de Santa Catarina. Turn right onto Rua de Santa Catarina, then take another right onto Rua da Meditação. The monument will be along the road.

• Public Transport

  From the Mercado do Bolhão, walk to the nearby Bolhão metro station. Take the Metro Line D (Yellow Line) towards Hospital de São João. Get off at the São Bento station. Once you exit, follow the walking directions provided from São Bento Railway Station to the monument.

• Walking

  If you are at the Ribeira area along the Douro River, head up the hill towards the historic center. Walk up Rua Infante D. Henrique, then take a left onto Rua do Ouro. Continue until you reach Rua de Santa Catarina. Turn right, and then take a right onto Rua da Meditação to find the monument.
