Ruhengeri, known today as Musanze, has its origins in the pre-colonial kingdoms of Rwanda. The region was inhabited by the Twa, Hutu, and Tutsi communities, who lived under the rule of local chiefs and later the centralized monarchy of the Kingdom of Rwanda.
