Getting to and around Ruhengeri

How to get there

Most international visitors reach Ruhengeri, commonly called Musanze, by road from Kigali after arriving at Kigali International Airport. The journey follows Rwanda’s well-maintained north-western road network through rolling highland scenery, and travel can be arranged by private vehicle, taxi or intercity bus. Regular public buses and minibuses connect Kigali with Musanze, although journey times depend on traffic, weather and stops. History of Ruhengeri

The Northern Highlands Before Colonial Rule

The area around present-day Ruhengeri formed part of the northern highlands associated with the Kingdom of Rwanda and its agricultural communities. Fertile volcanic soils supported intensive cultivation, while cattle keeping, local trade and relations between neighbouring communities shaped life around the Virunga ranges. The region was also influenced by the political and cultural networks of the Rwandan court, although authority in the northern borderlands developed through a mixture of royal administration and local leadership.
