History of Šumadija

The Heartland of Serbian Uprisings

Šumadija holds a special place in Serbian history as the birthplace of the First and Second Serbian Uprisings against Ottoman rule. In 1804, Karađorđe Petrović led the First Serbian Uprising from the village of Orašac, which marked the beginning of the modern Serbian state.
