If you're starting from Edinburgh Waverley Station, exit the station and head towards the East. Exit the station onto Market Street. Turn left onto Market Street and walk until you reach the roundabout. Continue straight onto Cockburn Street. Follow Cockburn Street until you reach the top and turn right onto the Royal Mile. Walk along the Royal Mile for a short distance, and take a left onto Blair Street. The Department of Magic will be located at 9 Blair St, right after you pass the entrance to the Mercat Cross.

If you are near Princes Street, you can catch a bus heading towards the Old Town. Look for buses numbered 3, 5, or 7. Get off at the South Bridge stop. From there, walk down South Bridge towards the Royal Mile. Turn left onto the Royal Mile, and then take a left onto Blair Street. The Department of Magic is located at 9 Blair St.
