Discover more about Madison County Nature Trail

The Madison County Nature Trail, also known as the Green Mountain Nature Trail, offers a tranquil escape high above Huntsville on Green Mountain. This 72-acre park is designed as a plant and wildlife sanctuary, providing a serene environment for visitors to immerse themselves in nature's beauty. The centerpiece of the park is the 17-acre Sky Lake, encircled by a 1.5-mile walking trail. The trail is relatively easy, making it accessible for hikers of all skill levels, including families with children. The well-maintained path features a mix of natural surfaces, with some sections being stroller-friendly. Along the trail, you'll encounter the Cambron Covered Bridge, a replica named after Joe E. Cambron, a former Madison County Bridge Foreman. This charming bridge spans an arm of Sky Lake and is a popular spot for photographs, especially in the fall when the surrounding foliage bursts into vibrant colors. Visitors can also explore an authentic log cabin, representing the homes of early settlers in Madison County. Originally built around 1810 near New Market, the Herbert P. Walker family donated the cabin to the county, and it was carefully reassembled at the Nature Trail. Stepping inside the cabin offers a glimpse into the lives of pioneers and provides a tangible connection to the area's history. The Nature Trail also features an A-frame chapel, available for rent for weddings and memorial services. Nearby, a moonshine still and spring house offer additional glimpses into the region's past. The park is a designated Treasure Forest and Wildlife Sanctuary, showcasing a diverse range of plant life, including the state's largest and oldest Champion Winged Elm Tree.
