History of Korçë Region

Korçë Region’s ancient roots can be traced back to the Illyrian city of Pelion, which existed during the 4th century BC. Located near the modern village of Selcë e Poshtme, Pelion was an important center in Illyrian civilization and played a significant role during the campaigns of Alexander the Great.
The city of Korçë was officially founded in 1484 by the Ottoman Albanian feudal lord Iljaz Hoxha. During the Ottoman period, Korçë became a vibrant trade and cultural hub. The establishment of the first Albanian school in 1887 in Korçë was a milestone in the Albanian National Awakening.
Korçë was a strategic location during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and World War I. The city changed hands several times between Greek, French, and Albanian forces. Notably, in 1916, the French established the Autonomous Republic of Korçë, which lasted until 1920.
