Korçë Region occupies Albania’s south-eastern corner, a highland territory of broad agricultural basins, forested mountains, alpine villages and two of the country’s most important lakes. Korçë is one of Albania’s most distinctive urban destinations. Getting to and around Korçë Region

How to get there

Korçë Region has no major international airport. Most international visitors arrive through Tirana International Airport, outside the region, then continue by road towards Elbasan and Korçë or Pogradec. Intercity buses and minibuses connect Tirana with both main towns, while road approaches from Greece are available through the Kapshticë border crossing near Devoll. Pogradec can also be reached from the direction of North Macedonia, subject to current border and transport arrangements. There is no passenger railway service serving Korçë or Pogradec, so road transport is the practical option.

Transportation

Korçë and Pogradec have local buses, taxis and intercity connections, but services become less frequent in the surrounding villages. A car is useful for reaching Voskopoja, Dardha, Vithkuq, Prespa National Park and remote parts of Kolonjë, particularly when visiting several places in one day. Mountain roads can be narrow, winding or uneven, and winter weather may affect travel at higher elevations. Currency and Payment
The currency is the Albanian lek, written ALL or Lek, as in the rest of Albania. Cards and contactless payments are increasingly accepted in hotels, larger restaurants and established businesses in Korçë and Pogradec, but cash remains useful for buses, taxis, village eateries, small shops, market purchases and rural accommodation. ATMs are available in the principal towns; do not assume that every remote village or border-area business accepts foreign cards. Keep some smaller lek notes for modest payments.
Safety
Korçë Region is generally straightforward for visitors, but normal precautions remain appropriate in busy streets, transport areas and accommodation settings. Driving requires care on mountain roads, especially after dark or in winter weather. Around Lake Ohrid and the Prespa lakes, follow local advice about swimming, boating and changing conditions, and do not leave marked paths in unfamiliar upland terrain. Weather can change quickly in the Morava, Gramoz and Prespa mountains. Carry water and suitable footwear on rural walks, where mobile coverage and services may be limited.

In villages and family-run restaurants, a courteous greeting and patience with service are appreciated. Albania’s national tipping customs are informal rather than fixed, but rounding up or leaving a modest amount for good service is welcome. Do not remove stones, artefacts or fragments from historic sites, and respect signs, church furnishings and private property. Around the lakes and protected areas, take rubbish away and avoid disturbing birds or livestock.

Korçë is particularly pleasant for exploring on foot, with cafés and cultural sites concentrated around its central quarters, while Pogradec is best combined with a lakeside outing to Drilon or nearby villages. Prespa is a protected, ecologically sensitive landscape rather than a conventional resort, so plan food, fuel and transport before leaving the main towns. Voskopoja merits more than a rushed stop if you want to understand its churches and former urban importance. History of Korçë Region

Prehistoric and Ancient Lake Settlements

The lakes and fertile basins of south-eastern Albania have supported human settlement since prehistoric times. Around Lake Ohrid and the Prespa lakes, archaeological evidence records communities that benefited from fishing, farming and waterborne connections, while the Korçë plain provided productive land between mountain routes. In antiquity, the area lay within the cultural and political world of Illyrian and later Macedonian-influenced communities. The lakes were not isolated geographic features: they formed part of a wider network linking the interior of the Balkans with routes towards the Adriatic and the Aegean.

Roman and Byzantine Crossroads

Roman administration and later Byzantine influence shaped the roads, settlements and religious landscape of the region. The interior routes connected the Lake Ohrid basin and the Korçë plain with neighbouring parts of Macedonia and Epirus, although travel remained dictated by mountain passes and seasonal conditions. Christianity became firmly established, and the region’s later Orthodox heritage grew from this long Byzantine tradition. Churches, monasteries and religious art preserved in the area reflect centuries of interaction between local communities and the broader cultural centres of the eastern Mediterranean.

Political upheaval and attacks in the eighteenth century contributed to its decline, followed by dispersal of much of its population. Ottoman Korçë and the Growth of an Urban Centre

Under Ottoman rule, Korçë developed as a regional market and administrative centre serving the surrounding agricultural plain and mountain communities. Its urban character was shaped by Muslim, Orthodox and Vlach communities, commerce, craft production and links with neighbouring lands. The town’s houses, mosques, churches, inns and market areas reflected this plural history. By the nineteenth century, Korçë had become an important centre of education and cultural exchange, helping to create the layered architectural and social identity visible in the modern city.

Education and the Albanian National Movement

Korçë played a notable role in the development of modern Albanian education and national consciousness. The Mësonjëtorja, opened in 1887, is widely remembered as the first officially recognised secular school teaching in Albanian during the late Ottoman period. Its establishment made Korçë an important symbol of language and educational reform. The city’s schools, cultural societies and Albanian-language activity contributed to the wider national movement, while the region’s communities continued to maintain distinct Orthodox, Muslim and Vlach cultural traditions.

War, Borders and Life in the Modern Region

The twentieth century brought occupation, wartime disruption, border changes and the establishment of Albania’s communist state.
