Discover more about Solomoni Jewish Museum Berat

The Solomoni Jewish Museum, nestled in the heart of Berat, offers a unique glimpse into the history of Jewish life in Albania. Founded in 2018, the museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of the Jewish community that has resided in Berat since the 16th century. It showcases the remarkable coexistence between Jews, Muslims, Orthodox Christians, and Catholics in the region over the past 500 years. The museum's exhibits feature documents, photographs, and artifacts that belonged to the Jewish community, illustrating their traditions, challenges, and contributions to Albanian society. A central theme is the story of how Albanians, guided by their Besa code of honor, risked their lives to save almost 2,000 Jews from the Holocaust during World War II. Albania stands as the only Nazi-occupied territory where the Jewish population increased during the war, a testament to the country's unwavering commitment to human dignity. The museum also touches on the story of Sabbatai Zvi, a messianic figure from the 17th century, and the influx of Jewish refugees from other European countries before and during World War II. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and promoting understanding between different communities.
