Zekate House, located in the Palorto quarter of Gjirokastër, is a remarkable example of Ottoman architecture in Albania. Constructed between 1811 and 1812 for Beqir Zeko, a local administrator under Ali Pasha, the house reflects the power and status of its original owner. It is considered one of the grandest and best-preserved tower houses in Gjirokastër. The house is a 'kullë', a fortified tower house characteristic of wealthy Albanians during the Ottoman period. Its design incorporates defensive elements, such as a secure ground floor and strategically placed decks. The house has two towers and a distinctive double-arched facade. Inside, the Zekate House features multiple floors connected by wooden stairs. The ground floor, traditionally called 'katoqi', served as storage for food, firewood, and cooking equipment. The upper floors include living quarters, bedrooms, and reception rooms, adorned with frescoes, carved wooden ceilings, and ornate fireplaces. The audience room, located between the towers, is particularly noteworthy for its colorful floral patterns and commanding views of Gjirokastër Castle and the Drino Valley. Today, Zekate House is open to the public as a museum, offering visitors a fascinating insight into Albanian history, Ottoman architecture, and the lifestyle of a prominent family in Gjirokastër.
