Saguaro National Park, established in 1994, is a haven for the majestic saguaro cactus, a symbol of the American Southwest. The park is divided into two distinct districts: the Rincon Mountain District (East) and the Tucson Mountain District (West), separated by the city of Tucson. The Rincon Mountain District, or Saguaro East, rises to over 8,000 feet and offers over 128 miles of trails, showcasing diverse ecosystems from desert to sky island. The Tucson Mountain District, or Saguaro West, features a denser saguaro forest and generally lower elevations. Both districts offer scenic drives, including the Cactus Forest Loop Drive in the east and the Bajada Loop Drive in the west. Visitors can explore the park's history, dating back to the Hohokam culture, evident in the petroglyphs at Signal Hill. The park's origins trace back to 1933 when it was established as a national monument to protect the saguaros from urban development. Today, Saguaro National Park encompasses 91,327 acres and provides a sanctuary for diverse plant and animal life, including roadrunners, Gila monsters, and various cactus species.
