Discover more about Old City Hall

Salzburg's Old City Hall, known locally as Altes Rathaus, offers a captivating look into the city's rich history. Constructed in the 14th century, the building served as the seat of Salzburg's municipal government for centuries, until the city council moved to Schloss Mirabell in 1947. The Altes Rathaus is located on Kranzlmarkt, near the intersection of Sigmund-Haffner-Gasse and Getreidegasse, not far from Alter Markt square. Its architecture reflects both Gothic and Renaissance styles, with a Rococo facade added in 1772. A prominent clock tower, complete with the oldest clock in Austria, rises above the building, while a statue of Justitia, dating back to 1616, adorns the exterior, a reminder of the building's former role as a courthouse. Today, the Old City Hall hosts a variety of cultural events and exhibitions. The Hall of Pillars on the first floor features rotating exhibits by Salzburg artists, while the Kulstrunk Panorama, a depiction of Salzburg in 1916, is displayed on the second floor. Although the main administrative functions have moved, the building remains a significant landmark and a testament to Salzburg's medieval past.
