Discover more about Monument to Richard Sorge

The Monument to Richard Sorge, located in Baku’s Nasimi district, stands as a tribute to Richard Sorge, a celebrated Soviet intelligence officer and a Hero of the Soviet Union. Born in Baku in 1895, Sorge is renowned for his crucial espionage activities during World War II. He provided critical intelligence to the Soviet Union while working undercover as a German journalist in Nazi Germany and Japan. The monument, created by sculptor Vladimir Tsigal and architects Rasim Aliev, Leonid Pavlov, and Y. Dubov, was unveiled in 1981. It is located in a park named after Richard Sorge. The monument is made from bronze and granite and is designed as an oblong, curved plaque resembling a radar installation. The centerpiece is a relief image of Sorge's face, with cut-through stone eyes, depicting his focused and intense gaze. Some believe the monument features fake bullet holes, and the eyes of the sculpture light up at night. Richard Sorge's intelligence work was pivotal during World War II. He is most famous for providing information about the German invasion of the Soviet Union and for confirming that Japan would not attack the USSR in 1941, allowing Soviet forces to be redeployed from Siberia to defend Moscow. Despite his accomplishments, Sorge was arrested in Japan in 1941 and executed in 1944. It wasn't until 1964 that the Soviet Union officially recognized his contributions, posthumously awarding him the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
