Discover more about Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum

Nestled on a hillside near the historic city of Shamakhi, Azerbaijan, the Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleum, meaning "Seven Domes," stands as a silent witness to centuries of Azerbaijani history. This evocative site served as a royal necropolis, the final resting place for the Shirvanshah dynasty and other prominent figures of the Shamakhi Khanate. While time and earthquakes have taken their toll, the remaining structures offer a compelling glimpse into the region's architectural and cultural heritage. Originally, the Yeddi Gumbaz complex comprised seven domed mausoleums, each meticulously constructed to honor the deceased. These were not merely tombs but rather expressions of power, status, and artistic skill. Today, only three of the mausoleums remain partially intact, while others exist as ruins or foundations. Despite this partial destruction, the site retains a powerful atmosphere of reverence and historical significance. The surviving mausoleums, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, exemplify the architectural style of the Shirvan-Absheron school. These structures are characterized by their octagonal or square bases, topped with distinctive domes. The external edges have niches, which are covered with arch shaped half-cupolas. The mausoleums are built from local stone materials, and each mausoleum has a unique design, but they also share common features such as domed roofs and simple yet elegant facades. Both internal and external parts of the mausoleum are faced with white stone. The most ancient of the remaining mausoleums is dated to 1810. Each mausoleum contains 3 to 4 graves adorned with massive gravestones. One of the mausoleums bears an inscription identifying the architect as Usta Taji Memar. Visiting Yeddi Gumbaz is a journey through time. As you wander among the weathered stones and crumbling domes, you can almost hear the echoes of the past. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, adding to the sense of serenity and contemplation. The complex is located adjacent to an ancient cemetery, providing further insight into the funerary traditions of the region.
