    Discover more about Caneel Bay

Caneel Bay, nestled on a 170-acre peninsula within the Virgin Islands National Park, is a destination steeped in history and natural splendor. The bay's story begins in the era of the Danish West Indies, where it was the site of the Durloo sugar plantation. In 1952, Laurance Rockefeller, captivated by the island's beauty, purchased the property and established Caneel Bay Resort in 1956. Rockefeller envisioned a harmonious blend of luxury and nature, designing the resort to minimize its environmental impact. For decades, Caneel Bay Resort was a sought-after destination, known for its seven pristine beaches and tranquil atmosphere. However, in 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria inflicted severe damage, leading to the resort's closure. After a period of uncertainty, the National Park Service took ownership of the land in April 2024 and has been working to restore public access. Caneel Bay Beach officially reopened to the public on August 1, 2024. Visitors can once again enjoy the soft white sand and calm, shallow waters that make it a perfect spot for families. The area is also known for excellent snorkeling, with opportunities to spot eagle rays, sea turtles, and colorful tropical fish. As part of the ongoing restoration, visitors can view the cleared and fenced-off ruins of the Durloo Sugar Plantation, offering a glimpse into St. John's past. While the resort remains closed, the reopening of Caneel Bay Beach marks a new chapter in its storied history, inviting travelers to experience the enduring beauty of this Caribbean gem.
