Discover more about The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park

The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, located just north of Aptos, California, is a captivating blend of natural beauty and intriguing history. This over 10,000-acre park offers a refreshing retreat with its dense second and third-growth redwood forests, fern-lined canyons, and panoramic views. The park's history is as rich as the soil that nourishes its redwoods. Originally inhabited by the Ohlone people, the area later became a hub for logging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Loma Prieta Lumber Company clear-cut much of the area between 1883 and 1923, leaving behind a landscape that has since been transformed through natural regeneration. Today, visitors can still find remnants of this logging past, including old mill sites and trestles, along the park's trails. The park was named in honor of Nisene Marks, whose children donated the original 9,700 acres to the state in 1963, ensuring its preservation for future generations. The park's deed specified that it should be used for camping, hiking, and nature study. The Forest of Nisene Marks offers over 30 miles of trails for hikers, bikers, and runners of all levels. Popular trails include the Aptos Creek Fire Road, a wide dirt road that leads deep into the park, and the Old Growth Loop, an easy trail that showcases some of the park's largest redwood trees. The Historic Loop Trail provides a moderate 7.5-mile hike with stunning views of Maple Falls. The park is also known for being the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. While the quake caused significant damage, it also created unique geological features that can be observed along some of the trails.
