Discover more about Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad

The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad (YMSPRR) offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the sights and sounds of a bygone era. Located near the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park in Fish Camp, California, this historic 3 ft (914 mm) narrow-gauge railway takes you on a scenic 4-mile excursion through the Sierra National Forest. The YMSPRR follows a portion of the original grade carved into the mountain by the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company in the early 20th century. The lumber company, which once had a large sawmill at Sugar Pine, California, operated seven locomotives, over 100 log cars, and 140 miles (230 km) of track in the surrounding mountains. Due to the Great Depression and a lack of trees, the operation closed in 1931. In 1961, Rudy Stauffer reconstructed a portion of the line, utilizing historic railroad track, rolling stock, and locomotives. Today, the YMSPRR features two operating steam locomotives, Shay No. 10 and Shay No. 15, both geared engines designed to haul logs over steep hills on rough terrain. During the one-hour narrated steam train ride, the conductor shares stories of the railroad line, the trees, and the wildlife native to the area. Passengers can choose to ride in open-air cars with split-log seating or enclosed cars. Special events like the Moonlight Special offer a BBQ dinner, campfire sing-along, and nighttime train ride. In addition to the train ride, visitors can explore the Thornberry Museum, housed in a relocated 140-year-old log cabin, which offers a glimpse into life on the Sierra slopes over a century ago. Other activities include gold panning, visiting the Sugar Pine Trading Company for books and souvenirs, and enjoying seasonal performances at the Lewis Creek Amphitheater.
