Discover more about Cathedral Rocks

Cathedral Rocks is a prominent rock formation on the south side of Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California. It's directly opposite El Capitan. The rock formation is made up of six distinct summits, three spires (Higher Cathedral Spire, Lower Cathedral Spire, and Church Tower) and three rocks (Higher, Middle, and Lower Cathedral Rock). The original inhabitants of Yosemite Valley, the Ahwahneechees, called these rocks "Poosenachuka," meaning “large acorn cache”. The name “Cathedral Spires and Rocks” was given in 1862 by James Mason Hutchings, who thought the spires resembled the towers of a Gothic cathedral. Cathedral Rocks towers over the landscape, providing an awesome sight for all visitors. While there isn't a designated hiking trail to the base of Cathedral Rocks, the rock formations are visible from many vantage points in Yosemite Valley. The best views can be found along Southside Drive, Tunnel View, and El Capitan Meadow. For adventurous travelers, the Spires Gully Trail offers a challenging hike to the top, involving some rock scrambling. Rock climbing is also a popular activity, with routes like Stoner's Highway, East Buttress, and Central Pillar of Frenzy attracting experienced climbers.
