The Palisades: A Natural Escape in New Jersey
Explore dramatic cliffs, scenic trails, and Hudson River views at this historic park, just minutes from New York City.
Palisades Interstate Park, stretching 12 miles along the Hudson River, offers stunning views from atop dramatic cliffs. It's a haven for hiking, picnicking, and exploring historical sites, just a stone's throw from New York City. The park's creation in 1900 saved the iconic Palisades Cliffs from quarrying, preserving them for generations to come.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Driving
The most direct way to approach Palisades Interstate Park is via the Palisades Interstate Parkway. From the north or south, follow the Parkway to the exit closest to your desired destination within the park (e.g., State Line Lookout, Alpine Picnic Area). Be aware that parking fees are in effect at most locations within the park. First hour is free at State Line Lookout, but visitors must enter their license plate into the pay station. Parking fees are NOT transferable from one park area to another. Limited parking is available, and lots often fill early on weekends.
Public Transport
For visitors using public transportation from New York City, the Rockland Coaches' Red and Tan Bus Line No. 9 runs along Route 9W in New Jersey. Check the Coach USA website for schedules and stops. From Route 9W, you may need to walk or take a short taxi or rideshare to reach specific locations within the park. Bus fare costs about $2.75 - $2.90.
