Getting There

  • Driving

    From San José, take the Pan-American Highway (Route 2) south towards Cerro de la Muerte. The drive is approximately 3.5 hours. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season, due to the steep and winding roads. Be aware that Route 2 can be foggy, so drive slowly and use low beam lights. There is free parking available at Las Cataratas Lodge. Note that the closest gas station is about 25 kilometers away, so fill up before arriving.

    Taxis are available from San Isidro de El General. The cost is approximately 5000 colones for the 7km trip to the lodge. Ensure the driver uses the meter ('Maria') or negotiate a fare beforehand. Taxi fares in Costa Rica start at around 565 colones (approximately US$1.10), with an additional cost of around 230 colones (US$0.55) per kilometer.
