Discover more about Giza

The Giza Pyramid Complex, located on the Giza Plateau near Cairo, is one of the most recognizable symbols of ancient Egypt. Constructed during the Fourth Dynasty (c. 2613–2494 BC), the complex includes the Great Pyramid of Khufu (the largest), the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the Great Sphinx, subsidiary pyramids, mastaba tombs, and various temples. The pyramids served as monumental tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, the oldest and largest, remained the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. The complex also includes temples where priests maintained the mortuary cult of the deceased kings. Surrounding the main pyramids are other structures, including smaller pyramids dedicated to queens, satellite pyramids, and mastaba tombs for nobles. The Great Sphinx, a colossal limestone statue with the body of a lion and the head of a human, is believed to have been built during Khafre's reign and served as a guardian of the pyramids. Today, the Giza Pyramid Complex is a major tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors annually. Ongoing archaeological projects continue to reveal new insights into the construction, purpose, and cultural significance of these ancient wonders.
