Discover more about Hôtel de Verclos

Located on the Place de la Principale in Avignon, the Hôtel de Verclos stands as a testament to the city's rich history and aristocratic past. Constructed in 1686 for Charles-Joseph de Joannis, Marquis de Verclos, the building likely was designed by the architect Louis-François de Royers de La Valfenière. The Joannis family, originally from Florence, had a significant presence in Avignon since the 15th century. The Hôtel de Verclos, also known as Hôtel de Joannis de Verclos, features a façade with three distinct sections facing the Place de la Principale. In 1949, the façade and roof were officially listed as historical monuments. The Place de la Principale itself has an interesting history, having been known as Marché au Safran (Saffron Market) and later Notre Dame de la Principale. The square is home to a chapel of the White Penitents dating back to the 14th century. Today, the Hôtel de Verclos has been converted into apartments. While it is not open for tours, its exterior can be admired while visiting the Place de la Principale. The square is one of Avignon's most pleasant, nestled in the heart of the city's historic center.
