Discover more about University Church, Freiburg

The University Church, or Universitätskirche, stands as a serene landmark amidst the bustling university buildings of Freiburg. Built between 1683 and 1701 by Jesuit architect Heinrich Mayer, the church was originally dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The statues of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga and Saint Stanislaus Kostka grace the main portal. Following the suppression of the Jesuit order in 1773, the church and its college were transferred to the University of Freiburg in 1793. The church has since served as a vital religious and cultural center for the university community. In 1827, it hosted the ordination of the first Archbishop of Freiburg, Bernard Boll. Severely damaged during a 1944 air raid, the church was reconstructed in 1956 with a simple, all-white interior. The starkness of the interior amplifies the impact of the "Gekreuzigten" (Crucified) sculpture by Franz Gutmann, a monumental and unconventional depiction of the crucifixion. The church's excellent acoustics and historic organ make it a popular venue for concerts, particularly those organized by the university. Today, the University Church continues to host divine services and remains a beloved performance space for the university's musical ensembles.
