Adelhauser Kirche: A Sanctuary of History and Art

The Adelhauser Kirche, formally known as the Adelhauser Kirche Mariä Verkündigung und St. Katharina, is a Roman Catholic church nestled in the Altstadt-Ring district of Freiburg im Breisgau. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Dominican Order and the city's evolution over centuries. Originally, the church was part of the Adelhausen Convent, which itself was formed by the merging of five medieval Dominican convents by 1786. These included the convents of Mariä Verkündigung (founded in 1234), Maria Magdalena, St. Agnes, St. Katharina (of Alexandria), and St. Katharina von Siena. The need for consolidation arose from the tumultuous times of the Thirty Years' War, prompting the relocation of the original convent from the village of Adelhausen (now part of Wiehre) within Freiburg's city walls for better protection. The new convent complex was constructed starting in 1687. The architecture of the Adelhauser Kirche reflects a simplified version of the Jesuit church, which had been started shortly before in 1683. The west facade, originally white but now red, faces the Adelhauser Klosterplatz. Niches framed by Tuscan pilasters and lesenes feature wooden sculptures of the Angel of the Annunciation and Mary, recalling the oldest convent. Above the door, a grated fanlight and a triangular roof sit beneath a basket-arched window that illuminates the nuns' and organ gallery. The triangular gable above is relatively unadorned. Inside, the church is a treasure trove of Baroque art. The high altar, side altars, and numerous paintings depict scenes from the life of Mary, Saint Catherine, and other religious figures. While the convent buildings have since been repurposed for schools, museums, and administrative offices, the church remains a place of worship and a testament to Freiburg's enduring spiritual heritage. Today, the Adelhauser Kirche stands as a unique historical site. It is one of the few Freiburg monastery churches built before 1800 that survived World War II without significant damage, retaining much of its original appearance.
