The Schlossbergsteg is a pedestrian bridge that serves as a gateway from Freiburg's city center to the popular Schlossberg (Castle Hill). Completed in recent years, this modern bridge provides easy access to the Schlossberg, a wooded hill offering walking trails, historical ruins, and stunning panoramic views of Freiburg and the Black Forest. The Schlossberg itself has a rich history, serving as a strategic location for nearly a thousand years. In 1091, Berthold II of Zähringen built a castle on the hill to control trade routes, leading to the settlement that became Freiburg. Over the centuries, the castle was controlled by various rulers, including the Counts of Freiburg, the Habsburgs, and French occupiers, each adding to its fortifications. The citizens of Freiburg breached the castle walls twice, highlighting its importance in regional power struggles. Sadly, the castle was destroyed in 1745 during the Austrian War of Succession. Today, the Schlossberg offers ample evidence of its past. Visitors can explore the ruins of Baroque walls and remnants of earlier fortifications. Key attractions include the Schlossbergturm (Schlossberg Tower), offering 360-degree views, and the Kanonenplatz, a scenic overlook above the historic city center. The Schlossbergbahn, a funicular railway, provides an alternative route to the top. The bridge enhances the experience, providing a direct route from the city center to the historical and natural attractions of the Schlossberg.
