Getting There

  • Walking

    From Kastraki, several monasteries are accessible on foot via well-marked trails. The walk to the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas takes approximately 15-20 minutes uphill. From there, you can continue to other monasteries like Roussanou and Varlaam. Be prepared for steep inclines and steps. Ensure you have water and wear appropriate footwear.

  • Public Transport

    The local bus from Kalampaka makes a circuit of the monasteries. Check the KTEL Trikala website or the bus station in Kalampaka for the current schedule. A single ticket costs around €1.60, and an all-day ticket is approximately €5.50. The bus stops at each of the monasteries. From the bus stop, there is usually a short walk to the monastery entrance.

  • Taxi

    Taxis are readily available in Kalampaka and Kastraki. A taxi from Kalampaka to the monasteries costs approximately €6-€10. Negotiate the fare beforehand or ensure the meter is running. A taxi can drop you off at the entrance of each monastery, minimizing walking. Consider hiring a taxi for a few hours to visit multiple monasteries.

  • Driving

    If you have a car, follow the main road (Epar. Od. Meteoron-Kallitheas) that loops around Meteora, connecting all the monasteries. Parking is available at each monastery, but it can be limited, especially during peak season. Parking is free. Be prepared to park along the road and walk a short distance. The distances between monasteries are short, making driving a convenient option.

Today, six remain active: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, Holy Trinity, St. Nicholas Anapausas, and St. Stephen's.
