Discover more about Saumarez Park

Saumarez Park, located in the parish of Castel, stands as Guernsey's largest public park and a central social venue for islanders. Managed by the States of Guernsey Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Service, the park provides diverse attractions suitable for all ages. Originally part of the de Saumarez family's estate, the park's gardens were significantly shaped by James de Saumarez in the late 19th century. Inspired by his time in the Diplomatic Service, particularly the water garden at the British Embassy in Paris, he introduced exotic elements like a bamboo walk, Japanese garden, camellia lawn, rose garden, and walled garden. Following his death, the park was acquired by the States of Guernsey. Today, visitors can explore various features, including the National Trust of Guernsey's Folk & Costume Museum, which showcases Guernsey's heritage within meticulously restored farm buildings. The Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden, a restoration project by the Guernsey Botanical Trust, cultivates fruits, vegetables, and flowers from the Victorian era. The park also includes a café, a large children's playground, an outdoor gym, and a duck pond with a Japanese-style pavilion. Saumarez Park hosts several annual events, such as Le Viaër Marchi, the Lions Club of Guernsey's Donkey Derby, and the North Show and Battle of Flowers. The park is open year-round from dawn until dusk, with free entry except during certain events.
