Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the nearest major town in the Pakaraima Mountains, which is Lethem. From Lethem, head north on the Takutu Road (also known as the Lethem-Annai Road) for about 70 kilometers until you reach the junction with the Iwokrama Road. Take a right at this junction and follow the Iwokrama Road for approximately 34 kilometers. The road will lead you directly into Iwokrama Forest. Look for signs indicating the entrance to the forest.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, you will need to take a minibus from Lethem to Annai, which is a common route. This journey takes about an hour and costs around 1,000 GYD (Guyana Dollars). Once in Annai, look for another minibus or taxi that can take you to the Iwokrama Forest entrance, which is about 34 kilometers away. Ensure you confirm the fare with the driver before starting your journey to avoid any misunderstandings; it should be around 2,000 GYD. The drivers will likely be familiar with Iwokrama Forest, so don’t hesitate to ask them to drop you off at the entrance.
Hiking
If you are adventurous and wish to hike, you can walk from Annai to Iwokrama Forest, but this is recommended only for experienced hikers. The hike covers a distance of approximately 34 kilometers along the Iwokrama Road. Ensure you have adequate supplies, including water, food, and a map. This hike can take several hours, and it is advisable to start early in the morning to complete it before nightfall. Be aware of the wildlife and terrain, and consider traveling in a group for safety.
