Car
From Reykjavik, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. Continue on Route 1 for approximately 130 km until you reach the town of Hella. At Hella, turn onto Route 26 and follow it for about 25 km until you reach the junction with Route 32. Take Route 32 towards Þjórsárdalur and follow the signs for Landmannalaugar. After about 35 km, you will find a sign for Stakkholtsgjá canyon. Park your car at the designated parking area. The canyon entrance is a short hike from the parking area.

Public Transportation
From Reykjavik, take a bus operated by Strætó (the public bus service) to Hella. Check the Strætó website for the latest schedules and routes. Once in Hella, you may need to take a private shuttle or taxi to the Stakkholtsgjá canyon area, as public transport to the canyon itself is limited. The shuttle service may charge a fee, typically around 5,000 ISK for a round trip. Once you arrive at the canyon, there is a short hike to the entrance.

Hiking from Laugavegur Trail
If you are hiking the Laugavegur Trail, you can reach Stakkholtsgjá canyon by taking a detour. From the Laugavegur Trail, head towards the canyon by following the trail signs. The hike to the canyon is approximately 5 km from the trail. Be prepared for uneven terrain and ensure you have adequate hiking gear. The walk will take about 1-2 hours depending on your pace.
