    From Reykjavik, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. Continue for approximately 140 km until you reach the junction with Route 26. Turn left onto Route 26 and follow it for about 55 km until you reach the junction with Route 30. Turn right onto Route 30 and continue for around 40 km until you reach the junction with Route 32. Turn left onto Route 32, which will take you into the highlands. Follow Route 32 for about 30 km until you reach the Alftavatn area. Note that a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the rough terrain.

    Travel from Reykjavik to Hella by bus (Strætó bus service). From Hella, take the bus heading towards Landmannalaugar. This bus operates during the summer months and will drop you off at a designated stop near Alftavatn. Ensure to check the bus schedule in advance as services may be limited. Once you are dropped off, there may be a short hike to reach Alftavatn itself.
